How "YES, AND" Works
Instead of fighting the thought “I don’t feel like it,” you acknowledge it and then add a commitment to act anyway.
For example, when you catch yourself thinking:
“I don’t feel like going for a walk right now."
Instead say: “Yes, I don’t feel like it, AND I’m going for a walk anyway because I know it will boost my energy and mood.”
“I don’t have the energy to prepare a healthy meal today.”
Instead, say: “Yes, I’m not feeling energized right now, AND I’m going to prepare a simple, nutritious meal because my health is important to me.”
“I’m too tired to do my workout.”
Instead, say: “Yes, I’m feeling tired, AND I’m going to do something quick and light to get my body moving because I know it’ll help me feel better.”
"I don't want to eat this salad right now"
Instead, say: "Yes, I don't feel like eating this, AND that's okay. I do plenty of things I don't always feel like doing because I know they benefit me in the long run."
This tool is powerful because it doesn’t deny your current feelings (no toxic positivity here!); it acknowledges them while reaffirming your commitment to your goals.
By using “YES, AND,”
👉 You accept that it’s normal not to always feel motivated
AND
👉 You remind yourself that you can still take action even when the timing, mood or circumstances aren't "perfect".
In essence, you’re building a habit of resilience by turning a moment of resistance into an opportunity for growth.
