One of my New Year's resolutions is to read more fiction. The other day, I was diving into a cheesy but entertaining crime drama when this paragraph really jumped out at me:
"Human curiosity is a dangerous and beautiful thing. It was why people binged television shows and stayed up until 3:00 a.m. reading a page-turner, the words blurring beneath their eyes. Everyone felt that driving need to know."
I had to laugh at myself...I was literally fighting to keep my eyes open because I didn’t want to sleep until I found out what happened next!
That moment reminded me just how fundamental curiosity is to the human condition. We all have a natural drive to explore, learn, and discover.
But when it comes to weight loss, curiosity almost never enters the conversation.
So many times, women approach their weight loss goals with fixed expectations like,
“I’m going to do X, and then Y will happen.”
As in, "I'm going to cut out bread and sugar, and then I'll lose 20lbs."
And when things don’t go exactly as planned, it’s easy to get discouraged and throw in the towel.
But what if...
Instead of clinging to those rigid expectations, you treated every step of your journey as an experiment?
What if you tapped into curiosity by saying, "Let's see what happens..."
Imagine if you said to yourself...
“Let’s see what happens when I try this new recipe”
“Let’s see what happens when I try going for a walk after dinner"
"Let's see what happens when I try focusing on my breath for a few minutes"
"Let's see what happens when I try adding more protein to my breakfast"
What if...
You let yourself experiment with making changes to your habits WITHOUT the pressure of immediate results?
When your expectations are set so high that anything less than perfection feels like failure, you end up convincing yourself there’s no point in trying at all.
But,
When you drop the pressure to have everything work out perfectly and let curiosity lead the way,
Each stumble turns into a clue,
An opportunity to learn, adjust and discover what truly works for YOU.
So,
If you often find yourself giving up out of frustration when things aren't perfect,
Try loosening up those rigid expectations and ask yourself,
“Let’s see what happens when I try this…”
You might just find that the journey becomes more interesting and a whole lot more successful.
