Why You Struggle to Show Up for Yourself (And How to Start)

May 14, 20252 min read

Start with what you want and work backward. Think and act from your goal, rather than toward your goal." — Benjamin P. Hardy

The other day, a friend told me her husband had used an AI app to age himself to 70 years old — and made that wrinkly, wise-looking version of himself the wallpaper on his phone.

He said it was going to motivate him to change his habits.

Spoiler: It didn’t.

That photo’s been staring back at him for months…but nothing’s actually changed.

And honestly? I’m not surprised.

Now, to be clear — the idea of connecting to your future self IS powerful. I use it with all of my clients at the beginning of our work together.

We get clear on what they want for their future — their health, their energy, their lifestyle — and we use that vision as a north star.

But there’s a catch.

When your future self feels really far away (like, say...70 years old far away), it’s easy to delay action.

You tell yourself:

“I’ve got time.”

And that makes it hard to feel urgency, care, or real connection.

So here’s the shift you need to make:

Don’t just think about who you want to be in 10 years.

Think about who you want to be in 10 hours.

What would support that version of you?

What would she thank you for?

After a long workday, would she want to come home to a fridge full of prepped meals…or nothing at all?

When she puts her head down at night, would she want to be proud she moved her body that day…or telling herself she’ll “start over” next week?

Because that version of you — 2 hours from now, 2 days from now —

She’s real.

You can feel her. Picture her. Care for her.

And when you start considering her, something powerful happens:

You start showing up for yourself.

Not through force — but through love.

And that’s where consistency really comes from.

Not more motivation. Not more discipline.

Just a stronger relationship with yourself — built on care, connection, and follow-through.

P.S. If this resonates, stay tuned — I’m working on something brand new called The Follow-Through Fix.

It’s a low-cost, personalized resource to help you break out of the start/stop cycle and start showing up for yourself in a way that actually sticks.
