3 Hidden Blockers That Sabotage Your Consistency

February 19, 20264 min read

Last year, I was working with a woman named Diane who came to me frustrated.

For months, she'd been stuck in a cycle.

She'd start strong on Monday, make it through Wednesday, and by Friday she'd be back to her old patterns.

Every single week, the same thing.

Her solution each time she fell off track was to just try harder.

Set stricter rules. Tell herself she'd be "more committed this time." White-knuckle it through the week.

And every time, the cycle got worse.

She came to coaching thinking I'd be the one to finally hold her accountable. That I'd tell her she needed more discipline, more willpower, more effort.

But that's not what happened.

Instead, my role was to help her get curious.

Because the truth is, Diane didn't have a discipline problem.

She had a clarity problem.

When consistency breaks down, most women's first instinct is to try harder. Restrict more. Be more disciplined.

But pushing harder without understanding why you keep getting off track is like trying to fill a bucket that has a hole in the bottom.

You can pour water faster and faster, but until you patch the hole, you're just wasting energy.

And what Diane needed wasn't more effort. She needed more curiosity.

She needed to get curious about what was actually blocking her from being consistent.

And after over 18 years of coaching, I've found that the biggest blockers to consistency always show up in one of three places:

1) Your Skills

These are the cognitive skills necessary for behavior change. Things like:

  • Obstacle anticipation (Can you see challenges coming before they hit?)

  • Self-monitoring (Are you aware of what you're actually doing?)

  • Emotional regulation (Can you manage stress without turning to food?)

  • Cognitive flexibility (Can you adapt when your plan doesn't work?)

When Diane got curious about this, she realized she had zero obstacle anticipation.

She'd plan to eat healthy all week, but the moment her boss stressed her out on Thursday, she had no strategy for it. She just reactively reached for food to calm her down.

2) Your Support

This is everything around you that makes consistency easier or harder:

  • The people in your life

  • Your environment

  • Your systems and routines

  • The tools and resources you have access to

Diane realized her kitchen was stocked with her trigger foods. Her partner didn't understand why she was trying to change. She had no meal prep system. She was setting herself up to fail.

3) Your Stories

These are the inner narratives you tell yourself about who you are and what's possible for you.

  • "I'm not a disciplined person."

  • "I've always struggled with food."

  • "I can't stick to anything."

Diane's story was: "I'm someone who starts things but never finishes them." And guess what? That story was playing out perfectly in her eating habits.

Once Diane got curious about which blocker was actually stopping her, everything changed.

She didn't need to push harder. She needed to:

  • Build the skill of obstacle anticipation (so she could plan for Thursday stress)

  • Change her environment (swap out trigger foods, involve her partner)

  • Rewrite her story (from "I never finish things" to "I'm someone who adapts and keeps going")

Consistency stopped being a struggle because she finally understood what was actually blocking her.

So, here's what I want you to think about today:

When your consistency breaks down, where do you think the real blocker is hiding?

  • Is it a skill you haven't developed yet?

  • A lack of support around you?

  • Or a story you're telling yourself about who you are?

Because once you know where the blocker is, you know exactly what to work on.

And that's when real change happens.

If Diane's story sounds like yours, you might benefit from getting clarity on what's actually blocking YOU.
