If you've been trying to get healthier for ages,
Then the following story about my client Beth might sound familiar...
Before we worked together, Beth would create a plan to do things like cook her meals at home, take afternoon walks, journal in the mornings...but she always struggled to follow through with those plans.
Constantly feeling overwhelmed by work and family obligations, she'd often tell herself "I've had a long day" and "I deserve this" as she ditched the balanced meal she had planned to cook and rummaged through the snack cabinet instead.
Which only led to feeling guilty, bloated, and even more frustrated with herself.
This cycle kept repeating, taking a toll on her weight loss progress and self-esteem. She felt stuck in an endless loop of “treat yourself” moments that never truly helped her feel better in the long run.
Maybe you can relate?
If so, then chances are you're using "feel good" self-care as a way of avoiding the REAL self-care you need.
We often think self-care is all about pampering—bubble baths, mani-pedis, Netflix marathons...
And while these can be part of self-care, real self-care shouldn't always feel good.
Sometimes self-care can, and should, feel challenging or uncomfortable.
It should stretch you to grow and choose what aligns with your deeper values, even when it’s not fun in the moment.
And if you are struggling to stay consistent with your plans to get healthier, then it's time to take a close look at the type(s) of self-care you are using in your life.
Inside my Empowered Eating Blueprint program, we explore three distinct types of self-care, each serving a different purpose in your overall well-being:
"Feel-Good" Self-Care
Think massages, pedicures, or a relaxing bath. These are activities that soothe and recharge you on a surface level. They’re great for quick stress relief and can definitely help you unwind. The challenge is when we only rely on these “fun” options to avoid the harder stuff...like Beth constantly swapping home-cooked meals for snacks because “she deserved it.”
"Adulting" Self-Care
Having difficult conversations, keeping a consistent bedtime, planning balanced meals...these might not be fun or exciting tasks, but they keep your life running smoothly. Often, we avoid these responsibilities because they feel like chores, but the reality is that they play a huge role in supporting your physical and mental health.
"Skill-Based (Growth-Oriented)" Self-Care
This is where you push yourself to learn something new or to refine a skill that aligns with your goals, like learning a new cooking technique, practicing mindful eating, or mastering a particular exercise. This is the self-care that stretches you outside your comfort zone and helps you develop the resilience and competence you need to stick with healthy habits, even when life gets messy.
So, if you’ve been telling yourself “I deserve this ____ (treat, break, etc)” while pushing aside the real self-care that will actually lead to better health,
Know that you’re not alone.
Many women wrestle with this cycle, hoping to escape stress or negative emotions without challenging themselves.
But relying on the avoidance or "feel good" self-care (like mindless eating or endless scrolling),
Instead of the more uncomfortable kinds of self-care (like maintaining boundaries or journaling about your emotions),
Eventually leaves you with the same problems as before, along with MORE frustration, shame, and guilt.
But when all three types of self-care coexist in your life, you’re far more likely to see real, lasting progress.
You’ll feel better about yourself because you’re not only pampering your body and mind, you’re also consistently supporting your goals and developing the skills that align with your deeper values.
