The Discomfort Dilemma: Why You Stay Stuck in Old Habits

"Discomfort is the currency of your dreams." ― Brooke Castillo

You might think the hardest part of changing your habits is figuring out what to do. But that’s not it at all.

The hardest part?

👉 Learning how to get uncomfortable...ON PURPOSE.

Because the truth is...

You’re already uncomfortable.

Your current habits come with their own set of discomforts.

  • The sluggish, overstuffed feeling after eating past fullness.

  • The tightness of your jeans that used to fit.

  • The disappointment of making another promise to yourself…and breaking it again.

You’re already experiencing discomfort...you’ve just gotten used to it.

And FAMILIAR discomfort will always feel safer and easier than NEW discomfort.

That’s why the idea of eating a little less, going to the gym when you don’t have the energy, or skipping dessert when you’re used to having it feels SO HARD.

But if you really think about it,

The discomfort of eating less, moving more, or setting boundaries ISN'T actually harder than the discomfort you’re dealing with right now...it's just NEW.

And new isn't always a bad thing.

Just like familiar isn't always a good thing.

Change = Choosing NEW Discomfort

If you want to break free from old patterns, you have to be willing to trade your familiar discomfort for new, intentional discomfort.

  • The slight hunger between meals as you learn to listen to your body.

  • The discomfort of saying no to a second helping when you’re already satisfied.

  • The uneasiness of trying something new—meal prepping, strength training, prioritizing sleep—before it feels automatic.

Yes, it’s uncomfortable.

But it’s the kind of discomfort that leads somewhere.

Instead of keeping you stuck, it moves you forward.

Make a Conscious Choice

So if you keep finding yourself repeating old patterns, even though they are sabotaging your goals,

It's time to get honest with yourself about the discomforts you’re already living with.

And then,

Decide which discomfort is actually worth it.

Because here’s the thing: Change will never feel comfortable at first.

But if you’re going to be uncomfortable either way…why not choose the kind of discomfort that actually gets you where you want to go?

So, I’ll leave you with this question:

👉 What’s one NEW discomfort you’re willing to lean into this week?

Shoot me an email and let me know—I’d love to cheer you on.
