Stop Blaming the Food, Start Solving the Problem

August 20, 20252 min read

"To ask the right question is already half the solution of a problem." — Carl Jung

Most women who struggle with evening snacking think the problem is obvious.

The food.

The “evil sugar.”

Their lack of willpower.

So what do they do?

They try to solve the problem by removing the food.

No cookies in the house.

No ice cream in the freezer.

No snacks in the pantry.

But here is what happens next:

  • They white-knuckle it for a while.

  • The cravings build up.

  • The deprivation grows louder.

  • And eventually, they end up swinging the other way.

Suddenly, they are eating twice as much of the food they had sworn to avoid.

Not because they're weak,

But because restriction almost always backfires.

And...because the food itself is not the real problem.

The real problem is usually a mix of:

Lack of structure. No schedule, no balanced meals, no planning, which means by the time evening comes, you are actually hungry.

Ineffective coping tools. Using food to soothe stress, loneliness, or boredom.

Ingrained habits. Watching TV with a bowl of snacks has become the default “night routine.”

Environment triggers. Chips on the counter, candy at your desk, no healthy options in reach.

Removing the food does not fix any of those problems.

Just like...

Going on a diet will not teach you coping tools.

Or meditating every morning will not teach you how to plan meals.

The first step in solving evening snacking isn't willpower. It's clarity.

Stop asking, “How do I get rid of the food?” and start asking, “What is the real problem I need to solve?”

Because once you know the problem, the solution becomes a whole lot simpler.

If you're struggling with evening snacking, ask yourself things like:

  • Am I actually physically hungry because I skipped meals or grabbed unbalanced snacks earlier in the day?

  • Am I reaching for food because I am stressed, lonely, or trying to numb out?

  • Has eating in front of the TV simply become a habit I slide into without thinking?

  • Is my environment setting me up to fail, with treats in plain sight and no healthier options prepped?

These are the kinds of questions that uncover the real problem, so you can finally work on the root cause instead of fighting a losing battle with willpower.

If you take one thing from this email, let it be this…

You don’t need more willpower. You need better questions.

Here's one to start with:

What would change if, instead of blaming yourself for “lack of control,” you got curious about the real reason behind your evening snacking?
