Why Pushing Harder Isn't Helping You Stay Consistent
One of the biggest misconceptions about follow-through is that the women who stay consistent are simply better at overcoming resistance (aka the "I don't wanna" feeling).
They push through it.
Power through it.
Ignore it.
Fight it.
Most women think that's the goal.
They think, "If I could just get better at overcoming these feelings, I'd finally be consistent".
But the women who stay consistent aren't the ones who are best at overcoming resistance.
They're the ones who've learned how to work with it.
Think about it like trying to hold a beach ball underwater.
As long as you're pushing, you can keep it below the surface.
But the second you stop pushing...
It pops right back up.
The ball never disappeared.
You just spent all your energy trying to keep it out of sight.
That's what many women do when they experience resistance.
Instead of letting those feelings exist, they try to force them away.
They tell themselves they shouldn't feel this way.
That they need to get motivated.
That they need to push harder.
The problem is, those feelings never actually go away.
They just keep demanding more and more energy to suppress.
The goal isn't to reach a place where you always feel excited to work out.
Or motivated to meal prep.
Or energized to go for a walk.
That's not realistic.
The goal is to be able to say,
"I don't feel like doing this today."
And still take the next step anyway.
Sometimes happily.
Sometimes reluctantly.
Sometimes while being annoyed the entire time.
Because your emotions don't have to change before you can take a step toward the life you want.
Now, if you're thinking,
"Okay...but HOW do I actually do that?"
That's exactly the point.
This isn't just one skill,
It's a combination of cognitive skills, supportive behaviors, and new ways of thinking...
Learning to notice your internal dialog without immediately believing every thought.
Learning how to respond to yourself with curiosity and compassion instead of judgment and shame.
Building routines and environments that make taking the next step easier.
Staying connected to what matters to you and the vision you have for your future self.
Creating a plan that still works on the days when motivation is nowhere to be found.
You might need to work on all of those, or just one.
What I've learned after nearly 20 years of coaching is that the thing that keeps one woman from following through isn't always the same as what keeps another woman stuck.
For some women, it's learning how to work with resistance instead of trying to overpower it.
For someone else, it's perfectionism.
Or poor planning.
Or an environment that constantly pulls them away from the habits they want to build.
That's exactly why I created The Follow-Through Fix.
