The Habits That Actually Support Your Nervous System
If I got all of my health information from social media,
I'd probably think the key to feeling calmer, less stressed, and more emotionally regulated was:
tapping
humming
cold plunges
breathing exercises
vagus nerve stimulation
Now, to be clear...
I'm not against any of those things (except maybe cold plunges because I prefer my showers at lava temperature).
Many of them can be helpful, particularly for managing stress in the moment.
But the internet puts way too much attention on hacks and not nearly enough attention on the fundamentals.
Because fundamentals don't make very good marketing.
A supplement that claims to "support a balanced hormone response during times of stress by helping stabilize cortisol levels and promoting energetic feelings" (wtf are "energetic feelings" btw?)...
That sounds WAY sexier than hearing someone tell you to:
Shutting down your phone at 8pm, buying black out curtains, and getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
But, despite what the plethora of online wellness marketers are telling you,
You can't out-hack neglected fundamentals.
Imagine your phone battery is sitting at 8%.
But instead of plugging it into the charger, you spend the day turning down the screen brightness, closing background apps, and putting it in low power mode.
Will those things help?
Sure. A little.
But none of them solve the real problem.
Your phone needs to be charged.
Your body and brain aren't all that different.
If you're regularly running on too little sleep...
Skipping meals or living off ultra-processed convenience foods...
Rarely moving your body...
And living in a constant state of go-go-go...
No breathing exercise in the world is going to undo all of that.
The biggest improvements to your ability to handle stress don't come from another nervous system hack.
They come from consistently taking care of the body and brain you're asking to handle all that stress.
That's because your nervous system isn't only responding to what you do during a 60-second cold plunge,
It's responding to how you live.
How much you sleep.
How you fuel yourself.
How often you move.
How much recovery you give yourself.
Those things don't just influence your physical health.
They influence your emotional resilience too.
And all those hacks?
They're like turning down your screen brightness.
Helpful if you're trying to squeeze out a few more minutes.
But they're never going to replace plugging the phone into the charger.
So if you've been feeling stressed or overwhelmed lately...
Before you spend another hour scrolling social media for the best nervous system resets or buying another supplement that promises to fix your stress,
Ask yourself whether you've been consistently giving your body the things it needs most.
Because those fundmentals are usually the things that move the needle the most.
Are they exciting? Not really.
But they create a version of you that's naturally more resilient, more energetic, and better equipped to handle life's inevitable stressors.
So here's what I'd love for you to think about today:
What's one fundamental you know would make the biggest difference if you simply did it more consistently?
Send me an email and let me know.
I'd love to hear your answer.
