Women Considering Pros and Cons

The Cost of Change: Why Your Weight Loss Goals Keep Falling Apart

"You can have anything you want, but you can’t have everything you want." ― Peter McWilliams

Remember how you started the year with clear, inspiring goals?

Maybe you wanted to lose weight, start eating healthier, or finally commit to regular exercise (or all of the above).

In January, the vision of a new you was crystal clear.

You were motivated. Ready to make it happen.

But now, a couple of months in, you might be noticing a familiar pattern: despite your best intentions, you keep slipping back into old habits.

Maybe you're lured by the comfort of late-night snacks, the fun of boozy weekend brunches, or the convenience of UberEATS.

And once again, you find yourself feeling frustrated—like you’ve let yourself down.

You might think you just don't have the discipline to change.

👉 The problem isn’t discipline. It’s preparation.

You were so focused on all the benefits of reaching your goal that you didn’t consider the cost of getting there.

And now, those unplanned sacrifices? They feel heavy.

Because yes—there are plenty of benefits to making changes...

BUT there are also plenty of benefits to staying exactly where you are.

And, until you’re fully honest about what you’re giving up, you’ll keep finding yourself stuck in the same cycle.

So, how can you better prepare yourself to change?

👉 Weigh the pros and cons.

Most people are familiar with a good old-fashioned pros and cons list.

You list the positives and negatives of a decision, and—voila!—you’ve got yourself a logical, objective way to make a choice.

At least…that’s the idea.

But when it comes to making lasting changes to your health, that kind of list misses the full picture.

Because it only focuses on what you’ll gain by changing…
Not on what happens if you don’t change.

Most women set goals by thinking about all the amazing things that will happen when they follow through:

"I’ll lose weight and fit into smaller clothing!"
"I’ll have more energy!"
"
I’ll feel more confident in a bathing suit"

And that’s great!

But here’s the problem:

Most women don’t consider the other side of the equation until they’re knee-deep in temptation, wondering why they keep “failing.”

If you want to set yourself up for success, you need to ask yourself:

  • What are the benefits of changing? (What do I stand to gain?)

  • What are the downsides of changing? (What sacrifices will I have to make?)

  • What are the benefits of staying the same? (What do I enjoy about my current habits?)

  • What are the downsides of staying the same? (What pain or dissatisfaction will I continue to deal with?)

Because the truth is—there are perks to staying the same.

If there weren’t, you wouldn’t keep going back to your old habits!

That Friday night pizza tradition? It’s fun and tastes amazing.
Sleeping in instead of hitting the gym? Feels cozy and easy.
Ordering takeout instead of cooking? Saves time and energy.

These things aren’t bad...but they are part of what’s keeping you stuck.

And until you acknowledge them, you won’t be fully prepared for the resistance that comes with change.

When you take the time to look at the full picture NOW, you can:

Decide if your goal is actually worth the trade-offs (and tweak it if needed).

Anticipate challenges ahead so they don’t catch you off guard.
Set realistic expectations so you don’t spiral into frustration when change feels uncomfortable.

To make this process easier, I’ve put together a worksheet that walks you through exactly how to do this.

This tool will help you get crystal clear on what you truly want AND what you’re actually willing to do to get there.
