How to Stay Consistent When You Don't Feel Motivated

June 24, 20263 min read

One of the most frustrating parts of trying to build healthier habits is how quickly things can change.

On Monday, you're excited.

You're committed.

You're motivated.

You have a plan.

This is the week you're finally going to be consistent!

Then a few days later...

You don't feel like doing it anymore.

The workout.

The meal prep.

The walk.

All of it sounds awful.

And even though this has happened more times than you can count, it still somehow catches you off guard.

Suddenly you're wondering:

"What's wrong with me?"

"Why is this always so hard?"

"Why can't I just stay motivated?"

In coaching, we often refer to this experience as resistance.

And one of the biggest mistakes women make is believing that overcoming resistance is all about FORCE.

Like, you just gotta make yourself do it.

And sure, brute force can work sometimes.

But resistance can be a pretty strong S.O.B.

If you didn't know this about me, I love boxing.

For several years, I trained pretty seriously.

I even had an amateur fight at a venue in Times Square.

And one thing boxing teaches you very quickly is that a fight isn't won in the ring.

It's won through all the preparation that happens before the sound of the first bell.

The hours spent practicing the fundamentals.

The conditioning.

The sparring.

The mental game.

By the time you step into the ring, the most important work has already been done.

And overcoming resistance to your healthy habits works in a similar way.

Most women expect themselves to win the fight against resistance without ever training for it.

They think, "well other people can just fight it, so I should be able to do it too!"

Ummm...would you think you could take down Laila Ali just because you watched a few PPV fights? I don't think so.

And not only are women unprepared to fight against resistance,

By the time they step into the ring, they're already at a disadvantage.

Because resistance rarely shows up when you're feeling your best.

It shows up when you're tired.

Stressed.

Busy.

Distracted.

Overwhelmed.

So you're operating with underdeveloped skills, fewer resources, and no plan beyond JUST DO IT!

And you wonder why you keep losing the battle...

The reality is that the women who stay consistent aren't the ones who fight harder than everyone else.

They're just the ones who are better prepared.

They've spent time developing skills.

They've built supportive routines.

They've created environments that make healthy choices easier.

They've decided ahead of time what's negotiable and what's not.

They've thought about how they'll respond when the inevitable "I don't feel like it" moment shows up.

In other words:

They've done a lot of the work before the resistance arrives.

Just like a successful fighter puts in a ton of work before stepping into the ring.

So if you've been struggling to push past those "I don't wanna" thoughts, this is what you need to remember:

Overcoming resistance happens before resistance shows up.

Not by eliminating it.

Not by pretending it won't happen.

But by accepting that it WILL happen and preparing yourself accordingly.

Here's what I want you to think about today:

What's one area of your life where resistance shows up predictably?

And what can you do before that resistance shows up to better prepare yourself for it?

Send me an email and let me know.

I'd love to hear your answer.
